IST Involved in ICO Generative AI Consultation

The IST is proud to have played a part in the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) consultation on Generative AI and Data Protection. This extensive process brought together diverse perspectives to address critical issues surrounding the ethical and responsible use of generative AI technologies.

Through our engagement, we contributed to shaping the dialogue and refining the ICO’s positions on how generative AI intersects with data protection laws. The IST representing the views and opinions of our members and in particular those members within the AI Group. The consultation outcomes reflect a shared commitment to fostering innovation while safeguarding individual rights in this rapidly evolving field.

The ICO has now published its Outcomes Report, which details the insights gathered and the resulting framework for generative AI developers. You can read the full report here: ICO Consultation Outcomes Report on Generative AI

In addition, the ICO’s Executive Director has shared a thought-provoking blog, emphasising the importance of transparency in how organisations use personal data in generative AI systems. You can read the blog here: Generative AIDevelopers: It’s Time to Tell People How You’re Using Their Information.

We encourage all IST members and stakeholders to explore these important resources and consider how they might inform your work in science, technology, and innovation.

Thank you to everyone involved for contributing to this vital discussion. Together, we are shaping a future where generative AI is developed responsibly, with trust and transparency at its core.
