Alan Turing Institute – IST Statement

The Institute of Science and Technology, (IST) a UK Professional Body supporting AI Practitioners is disappointed and concerned by the apparent disarray at the Alan Turing Institute, as reported in the UK press. Recent reports may give some insight into the underlying factors that have hindered projects in recent years.  The IST will continue to work with, and train, AI practitioners whilst the Turing deals with internal matters. We will also continue to lobby the UK Government to change benchmark statements to include AI education and ethics as well as providing AI citizen literacy.

The IST believes that providing funding for individual projects, although productive in some respects, falls short of addressing the broader needs of AI development in the UK. What is needed for AI in the UK is coordinated, cross-sector dialogue, which includes learned professional bodies, in order to drive forward AI methodology and best practice as well as aid the UK government in both the strategic implementation of AI and the integration of AI education across sectors.
