Remembering Bob Hardwick: A Champion of Staff Development and Technical Excellence

It is with great sadness that the IST acknowledges the passing of Bob Hardwick, a highly respected colleague and long-standing member and Fellow of the Institute.

Bob was a passionate advocate for professional development throughout his career at the University of Sheffield, where he worked in Engineering and served as a UoS union representative. His dedication to supporting staff at every level was evident through his leadership of several externally funded development projects, including the establishment and management of HESDA—the Higher Education Staff Development Association.

Within the IST, Bob’s impact was profound. Serving as President from 2000 to 2012, he played a pivotal role in shaping our strategic direction, securing funding for major initiatives, and supporting countless individuals on their professional journeys. He was instrumental in the creation of HEaTED, helping to build a national infrastructure for technician training that continues to support the sector today.

Bob’s legacy reflects his heartfelt belief in the importance of development—not just for organisations, but for the individuals who make them flourish. His impact lives on in the many professionals he encouraged and in the supportive structures he helped nurture. Bob will be remembered with quiet gratitude, lasting respect, and real fondness—for the wisdom he shared, the kindness he showed, and the steady and warm presence he brought to those around him.
