STEMM Professional Registers

Professional Recognition Across Science and Technical Practice

The Institute of Science & Technology (IST) is licensed by the Science Council to award professional registration across three STEMM registers:

RSci Logo
CSci Logo

These registers provide independent recognition of competence, professional integrity and commitment to high standards across science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine.

Professional registration demonstrates that your knowledge, skills and professional judgement have been peer-assessed against nationally recognised standards.

Progressive Registration Pathway

The STEMM registers offer a structured career pathway reflecting professional development and increasing responsibility.

Maintaining Professional Standards

All registrants must:

  1. Be a professional member of IST (Associate, Member or Fellow where applicable)
  2. Demonstrate the required professional competencies
  3. Commit to the IST Code of Professional Conduct and undertake Personal and Professional Development (PPD)
  4. Revalidate annually to confirm continued professional practice
Competence Framework

All STEMM registers are assessed against core professional competencies, including:

  1. Application of scientific knowledge and understanding
  2. Personal responsibility and accountability
  3. Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  4. Professional practice and technical proficiency
  5. Commitment to ethical and professional standards

Higher registers require increasing autonomy, leadership, and strategic impact.
