CSci is a benchmark of excellence recognising senior scientific professionals and leaders and is awarded by the IST on behalf of the Science Council.
CSci Professional Profile
CSci registrants may:
- Lead scientific strategy
- Manage complex programmes
- Provide expert oversight
- Influence policy or governance
- Mentor senior professionals
- Demonstrate high-level professional judgement
They demonstrate leadership, strategic judgement and high-level professional impact and professional authority.
This registration is suitable for those with:
- Level 7 qualification (Ofqual) or equivalent
- Around 5 years (or more) of relevant experience
- Significant responsibility, leadership or strategic oversight
- Evidence of leadership, influence and strategic responsibility

If you are unsure whether CSci is appropriate for your experience level, contact: registrations@istonline.org.uk
CSci applicants must be a Member or Fellow of the IST, and would normally hold a level 7 qualification (or equivalent) and be able to provide evidence of 4-5 years relevant professional practice at senior level.
Applications can be made through the IST (offline), or directly via the Science Council (online).
Core Competency Framework
Applicants must demonstrate:

- Commitment to professional standards
At CSci level, competence includes leadership, innovation and sector influence.
Professional and Personal Development (PPD)
CSci must demonstrate high-level, strategic development. Examples of relevant Personal and Professional Development activities include:
- Strategic leadership training
- Policy development
- Mentoring senior staff
- Publishing research
- Professional committee work
PPD must demonstrate:
- Strategic impact
- Sector-wide benefit
- Leadership in professional standards
Application Requirements
Applicants must:
- Be a current IST member (Member or Fellow as appropriate)
- Adhere to the IST Code of Professional Conduct
- Submit an application form
- Provide an extended CV
- Provide qualification certificates (if not previously supplied)
- Submit a Competency Report demonstrating strategic-level capability
- Submit a PPD report (previous year)
- Provide details of two referees (senior professionals)
- Pay the relevant application fee
If formal qualifications are not held, an equivalency report may be required.
Applications are reviewed by two IST assessors registered at the same or higher level.
Assessment Outcomes
- Successful – registration awarded
- Partially successful – further evidence required (within 3 months)
- Unsuccessful – guidance provided; right to appeal
Applicants are normally informed within 6 – 8 weeks.
Maintaining Your Registration
To retain CSci status, registrants must:
- Maintain active IST membership
- Renew registration annually
- Submit a current and comprehensive PPD record
- Demonstrate continued strategic professional impact
PPD records must show:
- A balance of technical, ethical and leadership development
- Benefit to professional practice
- Benefit to organisations, users or society
- Ability to provide written evidence on request
CSci registrants are expected to model exemplary professional standards.
Become an IST Registration Assessor
CSci holders are strongly encouraged to apply as IST Registration Assessors and are recommended to serve also as a Science Council Assessor and a Registrant Champion.
