Artificial Intelligence Professional Registers

Ethical and Robust: the IST is making AI Safer for Society with its AI registration framework.
Launched in October 2023 by the IST, this ground-breaking scheme was the first formal professional registration framework designed specifically for Artificial Intelligence Practitioners at all levels.
As a long-standing, highly respected professional body licensed by the UK Science Council to award professional designations, the IST leveraged its extensive registration expertise, alongside input from government, industry, and academic experts, to bring standardisation, ethical accountability, and technical rigour to the expanding AI workforce.
The AI framework runs in parallel with the IST’s dedicated Creative Technologies framework (endorsed by Creative UK to bring parity to creative practitioners) alongside its longstanding Science Council registers for individuals working across science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM). Together, these three complementary streams ensure that technical expertise, ethics, and professional standards are formally recognised across the entire modern technical workforce – whether in pure science, creative industries, or emerging AI technologies.
Designed by an interdisciplinary panel of IST experts in collaboration with industry, government and academic specialists, the framework is open to professionals working with AI models across all sectors. Whether your background is technical, scientific, creative, analytical, if AI forms part of your professional practice, this registration pathway is designed to recognise your competence and accountability.
Each level reflects increasing responsibility, autonomy and professional impact in the design, development, deployment and governance of AI systems.
AI registration through the IST demonstrates that practitioners:
- Apply AI methods competently and responsibly
- Understand ethical frameworks, governance and legislative considerations
- Can identify, evaluate and address modelling risks and societal impact
- Commit to ongoing Professional and Personal Development (PPD)
Key Impact: By establishing an independently peer-reviewed standard for competence and ethics, the IST framework offers employers, government bodies, and the public verified trust in the professionals building and deploying AI systems.
Registrants become part of a growing community of AI professionals within the IST, gaining access to specialist training, seminars, conferences, mentorship and peer networks. Through this community, practitioners are supported in navigating complex ethical, regulatory and technical challenges in a rapidly evolving field.
The IST AI Professional Registration framework has been formally reviewed and approved by specialists from partner organisations across industry, government and academia, ensuring it remains relevant, rigorous and aligned with real-world professional practice.
Progressive Registration Pathway
The artificial intelligence registers offer a structured career pathway reflecting professional development and increasing responsibility.
Registered Technician (RTechAI)

RTechAI recognises professional technicians applying artificial intelligence knowledge and technical skills in practice.
Typically suitable for those qualified to Level 3 (QCF/Ofqual) with at least one year of relevant experience, RTechAI acknowledges competent practitioners operating with responsibility within defined frameworks and technical protocols.
It provides recognition in its own right and may act as a progression route to RPAI and APAI.
Registered Practitioner (RPAI)

RPAI recognises professionals working in AI-focused and senior technical roles, applying artificial intelligence knowledge with increased autonomy, accountability and responsibility.
Typically suitable for those qualified to Level 5 (Ofqual) with 2–3 years of relevant experience, RPAI demonstrates professional capability at a full practitioner level.
RPAI may act as a progression pathway toward Advanced Practitioner (APAI) status.
Advanced Practitioner (APAI)

APAI represents a benchmark of excellence in artificial intelligence professional practice.
It recognises leaders who demonstrate high-level expertise, strategic responsibility, ethical oversight and significant professional impact in AI development and deployment.
For those qualified to Level 7 or above (Ofqual) with around 5 years of relevant experience, APAI reflects advanced professional standing, leadership and influence within the field.
Maintaining Professional Standards
All registrants must:
- Be a professional member of IST (Associate, Member or Fellow where applicable)
- Demonstrate the required professional competencies
- Commit to the IST Code of Professional Conduct and undertake Personal and Professional Development (PPD)
- Revalidate annually to confirm continued professional practice
Competence Framework
All Artificial Intelligence Registers are currently under annual review and full details will be confirmed again shortly.
Higher registers require increasing autonomy, leadership, and strategic impact.
Fees
Registration fees are payable annually in addition to IST membership fee:
- RTechAI: £50 initial and renewal
- RPAI: £100 initial and renewal
- APAI: £150 initial and renewal
** Please note:
Discounts are available for Education/Charity organisations on request.
All fees are payable up-front at the time of application. IST membership fees are non-refundable. For registration application fees the sum of £20 will be withheld (to cover admin fees) if an application fails and the remainder of the registration fee will be refunded.
