Registered Scientist (RSci)

Who is this for?

RSci recognises professionals working in scientific and senior technical roles applying scientific knowledge with autonomy and responsibility.

Typically suitable for those qualified to Level 5 (Ofqual) with 2–3 years relevant experience.

RSci Professional Profile

RSci registrants may:

RSci shows that you are not only delivering work, you are shaping outcomes and contributing meaningfully to your field.

RSci applicants must be a Member or Fellow of the IST, and would normally hold a level 5 qualification (or equivalent) and be able to provide evidence of at least 2-3 years relevant professional practice.

RSci Applications can be made through the IST (offline), or directly via the Science Council (online).

In addition applications for RSci through a shortened application route can also be made by Apprentices whose training has been mapped/approved by the Science Council. The shortened application route is available directly through the Science Council.


RPCiT applicants are assessed against professional-level competencies, including:

  1. Application of knowledge and Understanding – Identify and use relevant scientific understanding and methods
  2. Personal Responsibility – Plan and implement tasks according to protocol
  3. Interpersonal Skills – Communicate effectively
  4. Professional Practice – Apply appropriate practical and theoretical methods
  5. Professional Standards – Demonstrate commitment to ethical and professional standards

At RSci level you must demonstrate greater autonomy, increased professional judgement and broader impact.

  • Advanced scientific training

  • Conference presentations and posters
  • Supervising staff and students
  • Publishing technical work

PPD must demonstrate:

  • Increased responsibility
  • Improved quality and strategic thinking
  • Benefit to audiences, collaborators or organisations

Applicants must:

  • Be a current IST member (Member or Fellow as appropriate)
  • Adhere to the IST Code of Professional Conduct
  • Submit an application form
  • Provide an extended CV
  • Provide qualification certificates (if not previously supplied)
  • Submit a Competency Report
  • Submit a PPD report (previous year)
  • Provide details of two referees
  • Pay the relevant application fee

If formal qualifications are not held, an equivalency report may be required.

Applications are reviewed by two IST assessors registered at the same or higher level.

  1. Successful – registration awarded
  2. Partially successful – further evidence required (within 3 months)
  3. Unsuccessful – guidance provided and right to appeal

Applicants are normally informed within 4 – 6 weeks.

To retain RSci status, registrants must:

  • Maintain active IST membership
  • Renew annually and submit a current PPD record
  • Demonstrate continued autonomous professional practice

PPD records must show:

  1. A mixture of relevant learning activities
  2. Benefit to professional practice
  3. Benefit to users or society
  4. Ability to provide written evidence on request

RSci registrations may become an IST Assessor, Registrant Champion or Science Council Assessor.

Assessors:

  • Review applications and evaluate competency reports
  • Support maintenance of professional standards
  • Contribute to shaping the scientific profession
