Supporting Creative Practitioners

We work across industry, government, and education to provide insight, guidance, and expertise on the evolving role of technology in the creative industries. Our focus is on supporting creative practitioners; individuals who apply artistic skill, technical capability, design thinking, and cultural insight across areas such as:

▪️ Film and moving image
▪️ Design and visual communication
▪️ Music and performance
▪️ Fashion and textiles
▪️ Publishing and content creation
▪️ Digital media and emerging technologies

Recognising Creative Practice

We aim to foster open, informed dialogue across the creative industries and technologies, bringing together professionals, educators, and policymakers to explore how creativity is evolving in response to new challenges, tools, and cultural shifts. Our events and networks create space for creative practitioners to connect, share knowledge, and showcase innovative work across disciplines; from design and media to performance, publishing, and emerging digital platforms.

We believe that professional recognition matters. It supports career development, upholds standards, and strengthens the value of creative work across sectors. That’s why we offer Professional Registration for individuals working in creative industries and technologies – introducing the three Registers for Practitioners working in Creative Industries and Technologies as a mark of credibility, expertise, and commitment to professional practice.

Creative UK Partnership

Creative UK champions the UK’s creative industries, supporting innovation, growth, and talent across the sector. In partnership with the IST, Creative UK has endorsed the new Creative Professional Registration Framework, designed specifically for the technical workforce in the creative industries. This framework brings parity with professional registers in science and engineering, recognising the vital role of creative technologists.

Creative Practitioners Network

Our Partners HEaTED have developed a Creative Practitioners Network because it was noticed that those within the creative industries often felt excluded, underrepresented and had little to no opportunities for professional registration. We wanted to create a supportive network, run by technicians that caters to all specialties.

Accreditation Steering Group

The Steering group which oversees the development and delivery of the Creative Technologies Registers comprises representatives from the following organisations:

  • ScreenSkills
  • The IST
  • Creative UK
  • University of Manchester
  • Manchester Metropolitan University
  • Brunel University London
  • University of Reading
  • University of Lincoln
  • De Montfort University
Conferences

The creative technologies have a dedicated stream of cutting edge talks at the annual IST Conference as well as dedicated networking sessions. Members of the executive represent the IST at a number of relevant conferences and events throughout the year.

All members working in the creative technologies are strongly encouraged to present their work at both the annual IST conference and dedicated creative events in general.

Publications and Reports

The development of the Creative Registration Framework is underpinned by a series of independently produced IST reports, documenting its research base, consultation process and professional benchmarking. These reports demonstrate the structured, evidence-led approach taken to ensure the framework reflects the evolving needs of the creative industries.
