Who is this for?

RTCIT recognises professionals who apply creative and technical skills within defined frameworks, production environments or supervised settings. It provides formal recognition of competent, reliable and responsible early-career creative practice.

RTCIT registrants may:

  • Support creative production or technical delivery
  • Operate specialist equipment or digital tools
  • Assist in design, editing, coding or fabrication processes
  • Prepare assets, materials or technical setups
  • Deliver work with established briefs and production protocols
  • Follow ethical, legal and copyright standards

They demonstrate competence, reliability and professionalism within structured systems. This registration is suitable for those with:

  1. Level 3 qualification (QCF/Ofqual) or equivalent
  2. At least 1 year of relevant creative technologies-related experience

RTCIT provides registration in its own right and a progression route to RPCIT.

RTCIT applicants are assessed against foundational professional competencies, including:

  1. Application of creative and technical knowledge within defined frameworks
  2. Awareness of ethical practice, copyright and IP responsibilities
  3. Personal responsibility within supervised or structured environments
  4. Effective communication within creative teams
  5. Awareness of risk, quality standards and audience impact
  6. Commitment to Personal and Professional Development (PPD)

Technicians must demonstrate ongoing skills development. Personal and Professional Development activities should be appropriate to the technician level and may include:

Technical Development:

  • Learning new production tools or software
  • Equipment certification or operational training
  • Digital editing or fabrications workshops

Ethics & Governance:

  • Basic copyright and IP training
  • Data protection awareness
  • Responsible use of digital platforms

Professional Growth:

  • Team communication training
  • Supporting live productions or projects
  • Shadowing senior practitioners

PPD must demonstrate:

  • Relevance to current role
  • Improvement in technical quality
  • Awareness of professional standards

Applicants must:

  • Be a current IST member (Associate, Member or Fellow as appropriate)
  • Adhere to the IST Code of Professional Conduct
  • Submit an application form
  • Provide an extended CV
  • Provide qualification certificates (if not previously supplied)
  • Submit a Competency Report
  • Submit a PPD report (previous year)
  • Provide details of two referees
  • Pay the relevant application fee

Applications are reviewed by two IST assessors registered at the same or higher level.

  1. Successful – registration awarded
  2. Partially successful – further evidence required (within 3 months)
  3. Unsuccessful – guidance provided with right to appeal

Applicants are normally informed within 4 – 6 weeks.

To retain RTCIT status, registrants must:

  • Maintain active IST membership
  • Renew registration annually
  • Submit an up-to-date PPD record
  • Demonstrate continued professional practice

PPD records must show:

  1. A mixture of relevant learning activities
  2. Benefit to professional practice
  3. Awareness of standards and codes of conduct
  4. Ability to provide written evidence on request

Experienced creative registrants may apply to become assessors. Serving as an assessor enhances professional standing and contributes to the integrity of the register.
