Who is this for?

RPCIT recognises mid-career professionals operating with autonomy and professional responsibility. It acknowledges practitioners who manage creative projects, make independent judgements and contribute meaningfully to innovation and delivery.

RPCIT registrants may:

  • Lead creative or technical projects
  • Develop original concepts or production strategies
  • Manage budgets, timelines or client relationships
  • Supervise technicians or junior staff or students
  • Ensure quality assurance and regulatory compliance
  • Contribute to creative innovation and sector development

They demonstrate independent judgement, ethical awareness and professional accountability.

This registration is suitable for those with:

  1. Level 5 qualification (Ofqual) or equivalent
  2. 2 – 3 years of relevant creative technologies-related experience
  3. Evidence of increasing responsibility and independent decision-making

RPCIT applicants are assessed against professional-level competencies, including:

  1. Application of creative and technical expertise with autonomy
  2. Ethical practice, copyright governance and regulatory awareness
  3. Independent professional judgement and accountability
  4. Effective communication across disciplines and stakeholders
  5. Risk management and audience/cultural impact awareness
  6. Commitment to continuous Personal and Professional Development (PPD)

At practitioner level, competence includes independent decision-making and project responsibility.

Practitioners must demonstrate structured professional growth. Examples of Personal and Professional Development activities include:

Technical & Creative Development:

  • Mastery of advanced production technologies
  • Innovation in creative processes
  • Cross-platform development

Ethics & Governance:

  • Advanced copyright/IP management
  • Ethical AI in creative production
  • Sustainability in creative workflows

Leadership & Collaboration:

  • Managing projects or creative teams
  • Budgets and stakeholder management
  • Presenting at industry events
  • Publishing research or applied case studies

Professional Contribution:

  • Mentoring junior practitioners
  • Contributing to collaborative projects
  • Participating in industry forums
  • Supporting EDI initiatives

PPD must demonstrate:

  • Increased responsibility
  • Improved quality and strategic thinking
  • Benefit to audiences, collaborators or organisations

Applicants must:

  • Be a current IST member (Member or Fellow as appropriate)
  • Adhere to the IST Code of Professional Conduct
  • Submit an application form
  • Provide an extended CV
  • Provide qualification certificates (if not previously supplied)
  • Submit a Competency Report
  • Submit a PPD report (previous year)
  • Provide details of two referees
  • Pay the relevant application fee

If formal qualifications are not held, an equivalency report may be required.

Applications are reviewed by two IST assessors registered at the same or higher level.

  1. Successful – registration awarded
  2. Partially successful – further evidence required (within 3 months)
  3. Unsuccessful – guidance provided; right to appeal

Applicants are normally informed within 4 – 6 weeks.

To retain RPCIT status, registrants must:

  • Maintain active IST membership
  • Renew annually
  • Submit a current PPD record
  • Demonstrate continued autonomous professional practice

PPD records must show:

  1. A mixture of relevant learning activities
  2. Benefit to professional practice
  3. Benefit to users or society
  4. Ability to provide written evidence on request

Experienced registrants may apply to become assessors. Serving as an assessor enhances professional standing and contributes to the integrity of the register.

Assessors:

  • Review applications and evaluate competency reports
  • Support maintenance of professional standards
  • Contribute to shaping the creative technologies profession
