Registered Technician (RSciTech)

Who is this for?

RSciTech is designed for professionals applying scientific knowledge and technical skills in operational or applied roles.

It recognises competent practitioners working within defined procedures and established scientific frameworks who contribute directly to scientific delivery.

Typically suitable for those qualified to Level 3 (QCF/Ofqual) with at least one year of relevant experience.

RSciTech Professional Profile

RSciTech registrants may:

  • Apply scientific techniques and methods to well-defined tasks
  • Follow established protocols and quality systems
  • Support laboratory, technical, analytical or field-based
  • Contribute to data collection, validation and reporting
  • Demonstrate responsibility within defined operational frameworks

They show reliability, technical competence and professional integrity.

Start Your Registration Journey

RSciTech applicants must be an Associate or Member of the IST, and would normally hold a level 3 qualification (or equivalent) and be able to provide evidence of at least 1-2 years relevant professional practice.

Applications can be made through the IST (offline), or directly via the Science Council (online).

In addition applications for RSciTech through a shortened application route can also be made by Apprentices whose training has been mapped/approved by the Science Council. The shortened application route is available directly through the Science Council.

Applicants must demonstrate

  1. Application of knowledge and Understanding – Identify and use relevant scientific understanding and methods
  2. Personal Responsibility – Plan and implement tasks according to protocol
  3. Interpersonal Skills – Communicate effectively
  4. Professional Practice – Apply appropriate practical and theoretical methods
  5. Professional Standards – Demonstrate commitment to ethical and professional standards

All registrants must maintain ongoing development, examples include:

  • Learning new laboratory techniques
  • Health and Safety training
  • Equipment calibration training
  • Data management training
  • Participation in technical workshops

PPD must benefit practice and users of your work.

Applicants must:

  • Be a current IST member (Associate, Member or Fellow as appropriate)
  • Adhere to the IST Code of Professional Conduct
  • Submit an application form
  • Provide an extended CV
  • Provide qualification certificates (if not previously supplied)
  • Submit a Competency Report
  • Submit a PPD report (previous year)
  • Provide details of two referees
  • Pay the relevant application fee

Applications are reviewed by two IST assessors registered at the same or higher level.

  1. Successful – registration awarded
  2. Partially successful – further evidence required (within 3 months)
  3. Unsuccessful – guidance provided with right to appeal

Applicants are normally informed within 4 – 6 weeks.

To retain RSciTech:

  • Maintain active IST membership
  • Renew annually
  • Submit an up-to-date PPD record
  • Demonstrate continued professional practice

PPD records must show:

  1. A mixture of relevant learning activities
  2. Benefit to professional practice
  3. Awareness of standards and codes of conduct
  4. Ability to provide written evidence on request
