STEMM Professional Registers
Professional Recognition Across Science and Technical Practice
The Institute of Science & Technology (IST) is licensed by the Science Council to award professional registration across three STEMM registers:
These registers provide independent recognition of competence, professional integrity and commitment to high standards across science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine.
Professional registration demonstrates that your knowledge, skills and professional judgement have been peer-assessed against nationally recognised standards.
Progressive Registration Pathway
The STEMM registers offer a structured career pathway reflecting professional development and increasing responsibility.
Registered Technician (RSciTech)

RSciTech recognises professional technicians applying scientific knowledge and technical skills in practice.
Typically suitable for those qualified to Level 3 (QCF/Ofqual) with at least one year of relevant experience, RSciTech acknowledges competent practitioners operating with responsibility within defined protocols.
It provides recognition in its own right and may act as a progression route to RSci and CSci.
Registered Scientist (RSci)

RSci recognises those working in scientific and senior technical roles, applying scientific knowledge with increased autonomy and responsibility.
Typically suitable for those qualified to Level 5 (Ofqual) with 2 – 3 years of relevant experience, RSci demonstrates professional capability at a full practitioner level.
RSci can act as a progression pathway toward Chartered Scientist (CSci) status.
Chartered Scientist (CSci)

CSci is a well-established benchmark of excellence across the professions.
It recognises senior scientific practitioners and leaders who demonstrate high-level expertise, strategic responsibility and significant professional impact.
Typically suitable for those qualified to Level 7 (Ofqual) with around 5 years of relevant experience, CSci reflects advanced professional standing and leadership within the field.

All registrants must:

Competence Framework
All STEMM registers are assessed against core professional competencies, including:
- Application of scientific knowledge and understanding
- Personal responsibility and accountability
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills
- Professional practice and technical proficiency
- Commitment to ethical and professional standards
Higher registers require increasing autonomy, leadership, and strategic impact.
Fees
Registration fees are payable annually in addition to IST membership:
- RSciTech: £35 initial / £25 renewal
- RSci: £44 initial / £34 renewal
- CSci: £68 initial / £58 renewal
Science Council registration fees and IST membership subscriptions may be eligible for UK tax relief under Section 344 of the Income Tax (Earnings and Pensions) Act 2003.
