
Registered Practitioner (RPAI)
Who is this for?
RPAI recognises professionals who apply artificial intelligence knowledge with autonomy, professional judgement and accountability.
It represents full practitioner status within the IST AI Professional Registration pathway and provides formal recognition of independent, responsible and ethically grounded AI practice. RPAI is suitable for professionals who design, implement, evaluate or oversee AI systems and who make informed technical and ethical decisions within their role.

RPAI Professional Profile
RPAI registrants may:
- Design and implement AI models or systems
- Lead technical elements of AI projects
- Evaluate modelling approaches and select appropriate methodologies
- Identify and mitigate bias, risk and unintended consequences
- Interpret and apply regulatory and governance requirements
- Advise colleagues or stakeholders on responsible AI use
They demonstrate autonomy, professional judgement and ethical awareness in real-world AI environments.
This registration is suitable for those with:
- Level 5 qualification (Ofqual) or equivalent
- 2 – 3 years of relevant AI-related experience
- Evidence of increasing responsibility and independent decision-making

At RPAI level, candidates must demonstrate independent application and informed decision-making.
Continuing Professional Development (PPD) for AI Professionals
AI is a rapidly evolving discipline. All registrants must demonstrate ongoing development. Examples of Personal and Professional Development activities include:
Technical Development:
- Advanced machine learning or deep learning training
- Specialisation in large language models or generative AI
- Model evaluation and validation methodologies
- Data governance or cybersecurity certifications
Ethics & Governance:
- AI regulatory compliance training
- Workshops on algorithmic fairness and transparency
- Research into explainability, audibility or accountability
- Policy development relating to AI use
Leadership & Collaboration:
- Leading AI project teams
- Cross-functional AI implementation planning
- Presenting at technical conferences
- Publishing research or applied case studies
Professional Contribution:
- Mentoring junior practitioners
- Contributing to standards development
- Participating in advisory panels
- Supporting responsible AI initiatives
PPD must demonstrate:
- Relevance to current or future AI practice
- Benefit to quality of professional work
- Benefit to users or society
Application Requirements
Applicants must:
- Be a current IST member (Member or Fellow as appropriate)
- Adhere to the IST Code of Professional Conduct
- Submit an application form
- Provide an extended CV
- Provide qualification certificates (if not previously supplied)
- Submit a Competency Report
- Submit a PPD report (previous year)
- Provide details of two referees
- Pay the relevant application fee
If formal qualifications are not held, an equivalency report may be required.
Applications are reviewed by two IST assessors registered at the same or higher level.
Assessment Outcomes
- Successful – registration awarded
- Partially successful – further evidence required (within 3 months)
- Unsuccessful – guidance provided; right to appeal
Applicants are normally informed within 4 – 6 weeks.
Maintaining Your Registration
To retain RPAI status, registrants must:
- Maintain active IST membership
- Renew registration annually
- Submit a current PPD record
- Demonstrate continued professional practice
PPD records must show:
- A mixture of relevant learning activities
- Benefit to professional practice
- Benefit to users or society
- Ability to provide written evidence on request
Become an IST AI Assessor
Experienced artificial intelligence registrants may apply to become assessors. Serving as an assessor enhances professional standing and contributes to the integrity of the register.
Assessors:
- Review applications and evaluate competency reports
- Support maintenance of professional standards
- Contribute to shaping the AI profession
