Meet the IST President

Profile picture of Dr Helen Sharman

Few people can say they have travelled into space, but our President, Dr Helen Sharman CMG OBE, FRSC FIScT, can proudly say she made history as the first British astronaut.

Helen became a household name in 1991 when she launched aboard a Soyuz spacecraft and travelled to the Mir Space Station, where she spent eight days carrying out scientific experiments and research. Yet despite this remarkable achievement, Helen often describes herself as a “space technician” , a reflection of her enduring belief in the importance of technical expertise, practical problem-solving, and the skilled professionals who make great things happen.

That perspective makes Helen a natural champion for the technical community and an inspiring President of the Institute of Science & Technology.

A President Who Connects with Members

Helen is an active and engaged President who regularly meets members, attends Institute events, chairs the Annual Technical Conference, and speaks at the AGM. Through her President’s Address and contributions to IST publications, she shares insights, encouragement, and reflections drawn from a truly extraordinary career.

Members often comment on Helen’s warmth, approachability, and genuine interest in hearing about their work. Whether speaking with apprentices, technicians, managers, researchers, or senior leaders, she understands the vital role technical professionals play in every sector.

From Chemistry Graduate to Astronaut

Helen’s journey began with a degree in Chemistry from the University of Sheffield before moving into research and development at GEC, where she worked on advanced display screen technologies.

She later joined Mars Confectionery, where she was part of the team that developed one of Britain’s most recognisable products, the Mars Ice Cream Bar. While it may seem a world away from spaceflight, Helen often highlights how innovation, teamwork, and technical expertise underpin success in every field.

Then came the opportunity that changed everything.

Responding to a radio advertisement seeking applicants for a British astronaut mission, Helen embarked on an intensive programme of training before becoming the first Briton to travel into space.

Inspiring Generations

Following her return to Earth, Helen dedicated much of her career to science communication and public engagement. For decades she has inspired audiences around the world through talks on science, technology, leadership, teamwork, resilience, and problem-solving.

Today, alongside her role as IST President, Helen serves as UK Outreach Ambassador at Imperial College London, continuing her work to inspire future generations and promote the value of science, technology, and technical expertise.

Her ability to connect complex ideas with real-world experiences has made her one of the UK’s most respected and sought-after speakers.

Championing the Technical Profession

Helen’s story demonstrates that technical careers can take you anywhere; from laboratories and manufacturing facilities to boardrooms, classrooms, and even outer space.

As President of the IST, she remains a passionate advocate for technicians and technical professionals, recognising the knowledge, dedication, and professionalism they bring to society every day.

Her journey reminds us that behind every breakthrough, every innovation, and every great achievement are skilled people applying their expertise to solve problems and make a difference.

We are proud to have Dr Helen Sharman as our President and grateful for the inspiration, energy, and enthusiasm she brings to the Institute and the wider technical community.

After all, not many Presidents can say they’ve literally reached for the stars.
