The Institute is delighted to announce the appointment of Gillian Riddell FIScT to the IST Executive Committee as Membership Officer.
Gillian brings more than 30 years of experience as a senior technical leader, educator and advocate, with an outstanding track record of championing the technical profession across higher education, research support and governance.
Currently serving as Technician Commitment Manager at Queen’s University Belfast, Gillian leads strategic initiatives that enhance the visibility, recognition, career development and sustainability of technical professionals. Her work has been instrumental in embedding technical careers within the University’s research culture agenda and strengthening support for technicians across the sector. She is also the co-founder of the All-Ireland Technical Staff Network, an initiative that has strengthened collaboration, professional development and community-building among technical staff.
Before moving into her current strategic leadership role, Gillian spent more than two decades providing technical leadership in the biological sciences. Her expertise spans ecology, sustainability, laboratory management, field-based research and health and safety. She has supported major research programmes funded by organisations including NERC, BBSRC and the Leverhulme Trust, while also co-designing and teaching on more than 60 undergraduate field courses.
A Fellow of the Institute of Science & Technology since 2022, Gillian’s exceptional contribution to the profession was recognised in 2025 when she was awarded the prestigious Papin Medal for her outstanding leadership and advocacy on behalf of technicians.
As Membership Officer, Gillian will help drive the future growth and sustainability of the Institute, ensuring that the needs, aspirations and professional development of our members remain central to our strategy.
