What’s in a Name? Why the Institute of Science & Technology Supports More Than Science

  • News

Every so often, someone asks us a perfectly reasonable question:

It’s a fair question.

After all, today’s technical workforce is incredibly diverse. Our members include laboratory technicians, AI practitioners, creative technologists, data specialists, technical managers, engineers, digital professionals, research staff, broadcast technicians, makers, developers, conservators, production specialists and many more.

So why haven’t we changed our name?

Perhaps we could become the:

IAICISEMMT – Institute of Artificial Intelligence, Creative Industries, Science, Engineering, Medicine, Mathematics & Technologies

Or perhaps:

Institute of AI, Creative Industries, STEMM, Digital Innovation and Emerging Technologies.

Maybe even:

Institute for the Technical Workforce.

The challenge, of course, is that no name could ever fully capture the breadth of modern technical professions.

The reality is that every organisation eventually reaches a point where its name tells only part of the story.

What truly matters is not what an organisation is called… What matters is what it does.

The IST has been supporting technical professionals since 1948.

Originally established as the Science Technologists Association, our roots were firmly within laboratory science and scientific technology. As the technical landscape evolved, so did we. In 2007, we became the Institute of Science & Technology, recognising that technology had become an increasingly important part of the professional landscape.

Today, technology touches every sector.

The creative industries rely on advanced technologies for virtual production, immersive experiences, digital design, broadcasting, audio engineering and interactive media.

Artificial Intelligence sits at the intersection of science, computing, mathematics, ethics, governance and creativity.

Healthcare depends on technology.

Research depends on technology.

Industry depends on technology.

Education depends on technology.

Creativity depends on technology.

Increasingly, the boundaries between disciplines are disappearing altogether.

If there is one area that perfectly demonstrates this convergence, it is Artificial Intelligence.

AI draws upon mathematics, computer science and engineering. Yet it is increasingly transforming creative practice, helping artists, designers, musicians, filmmakers and creative technologists develop new forms of expression and innovation.

At the same time, creative thinking is helping shape the future of responsible AI, ensuring technologies are human-centred, ethical and accessible.

Science and creativity are no longer separate worlds.

They are connected by technology.

And technicians, specialists and practitioners are often the people bringing those worlds together.

Although our membership has expanded significantly, our purpose has not changed.

We exist to support technical professionals.

Whether someone works in a research laboratory, a university makerspace, a television studio, an AI development team, a museum, a creative production environment, a healthcare facility or an engineering workshop, they often share the same professional challenges:

  • Recognition of technical expertise
  • Career development opportunities
  • Professional registration
  • Continuing professional development
  • Networking and community
  • Visibility and professional identity

The disciplines may differ.

The professional needs are remarkably similar.

The organisations that make the greatest difference are rarely defined by their names. They are defined by their mission, their values and the communities they serve.

The IST’s mission is to support, develop and champion technical professionals wherever they work.

That includes science. That includes engineering. That includes AI and digital technologies. That includes creative industries and technologies. And it includes the many professions that sit between and beyond those categories.

Our name reflects our heritage.

Our work reflects our future.

As technology continues to evolve, so will the technical workforce. The IST will continue evolving alongside it, ensuring that technical professionals receive the recognition, support and professional community they deserve.

Because ultimately, the most important part of our name is not “Science” or “Technology”.

It’s the word that comes first:

Institute.

A community of people coming together to learn, develop, collaborate and advance their profession.

That is what the IST has always been.

And that is what it will continue to be.
